CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the Cannabis sativa plant, which is also known as marijuana or hemp, according to the US National Library of Medicine.

It's a naturally occurring substance that's used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike its cousin, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the major active ingredient in marijuana, CBD is not a psychoactive.

The plant Cannabis sativa has two primary species, hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD, but there's a much higher percentage in hemp, which also has very low (less than 0.3%) levels of THC compared to marijuana.

When people talk about hemp oil, they're referring to oil extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. There are no cannabinoids—CBD or THC—in hemp oil. This ingredient is packed with healthy fats and often appears in beauty products for its moisturizing benefits.

That being said, the only CBD medication that is currently FDA-approved is Epidiolex, which the agency approved last year for the treatment of certain types of epilepsy. However, studies and anecdotes have suggested that CBD has helped with a slew of other health conditions, including back pain, anxiety, arthritis, even cancer. Some of these claims have more research than others, though.

CBD Extracts:

CBD isolate- is made by pulling CBD from the plant and removing all other ingredients. It is less effective than its other extracts as it takes away many important components like many types of cannabinoids and terpenes (these compounds are found in many kinds of plants and are primary components in essential oils. They are also responsible for the smell of cannabis plants. Like cannabinoids, each individual terpene is associated with a unique effect).

CBD Broad-spectrum- contains cannabidiol and the other natural compounds found within the plant, except for THC, which is completely removed after the extraction process has taken place.

CBD Full Spectrum- Full spectrum products contain all the natural chemicals found in the hemp plant, including the many types of cannabinoids and terpenes, which works more effectively than stripping all its components.

To better help de-stress and alleviate pain, I have recently added the use of CBD Full Spectrum by Moon Mother Hemp to my practice.

According to Moon Mother Hemp website, "Our therapeutic CBD massage oil is a blend of full spectrum hemp extract paired with lavender essential oil and jojoba oil that works quickly to soothe muscles and restore balance to body and mind. Lavender essential oil doesn’t just provide you with a calming scent while you enjoy a rejuvenating massage though – it also soothes the skin and provides anti-inflammatory properties to the muscles and joints below the skin. The oil is partnered with jojoba oil, which acts as nature’s best moisturizer while alleviating skin irritation. The cruelty-free formula makes this a highly ethical self-care ritual that you’ll want to indulge in on a daily basis thanks to its intensely healing nature.

Our full-spectrum, organically grown hemp extract comes from our USDA-certified family farm in Colorado. We make it using the CO2 method for more stability and bioavailability. We have a third-party lab confirm its quality, and you can find the results in our CBD Certificate of Analysis (COA)."

Research on the potential health benefits of CBD oil is ongoing, so new therapeutic uses for this natural remedy are sure to be discovered.

Though there is much to be learned about the efficacy and safety of CBD, results from recent studies suggest that CBD may provide a safe, powerful natural treatment for many health issues. Pregnant women and those breastfeeding are discourage to use this product.
